KUCHING: Sarawak has set its sights on becoming a regional clean energy powerhouse, with plans to export renewable energy to Singapore and expand cross-border interconnections across Borneo.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) had recently granted conditional approval for Sarawak to export one gigawatt of renewable energy to the republic.

He said this marked a major milestone in Sarawak’s journey to strengthen its leadership in renewable energy and advance regional energy integration.

“The project will soon move towards implementation with plans for secure transmission links that connect our grids and our ports.

“For Singapore, it strengthens energy security. For Sarawak, it drives growth and cements our leadership in renewable energy,” he said.

He said this when delivering his keynote address at the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2025 here Monday (Oct 27).

Abang Johari stressed that the collaboration reaffirmed a shared vision of a sustainable and interconnected energy future for Asia, built on Sarawak’s decades of responsible hydropower development.

“With the 275kV and 500kV backbone in place, clean energy now flows efficiently across Sarawak.

“This landmark collaboration reflects the strength of Sarawak’s renewable foundation and sustained investment in our grid,” he added.

On the same note, he said Sarawak is pursuing its next ambition of building a robust, interconnected Borneo grid as part of the broader ASEAN power grid.

He asserted that Sarawak welcomed partners from government, industry and finance to walk together on this clean energy journey to power progress, connect economies, and secure a brighter future for Asia.

“We have already proven this model through our interconnection with West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and are now working with Sabah and Brunei to expand this link.

“As we move forward, Sarawak remains committed to sustainable hydropower leadership and to advancing regional energy integration,” he said.

On Oct 17, Sarawak Energy in a statement said that its cross-border power export project to Singapore had secured conditional approval from the republic’s EMA.

The project, undertaken jointly by Sarawak Energy and Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, will supply about one gigawatt of renewable energy to Singapore, with transmission targeted to commence by 2035 or earlier.
