KUCHING: Sarawak’s shooting squad is stepping up preparations for a new challenge at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026, with athletes intensifying training on electronic target systems ahead of the competition in Selangor.
Head coach Ahmad Anai said this year’s shooting competition will be conducted entirely using electronic targets, marking a significant change from previous editions that relied on manual scoring.
“The biggest challenge this time is the use of the electronic target system. Previous SUKMAs used manual targets, but this year everything will be electronic.
“That’s why we train with electronic targets every day so our athletes will be familiar with the system when they compete there”, he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted.
With less than three weeks remaining before the Games, Ahmad said preparations have progressed smoothly despite several athletes juggling training with their SPM trial examinations.
The squad has also entered its centralised training phase, with several shooters already recording scores that have surpassed their previous personal bests.
Sarawak has finalised a 22-member squad comprising four women’s pistol shooters, five men’s pistol shooters, seven women’s rifle shooters and six men’s rifle shooters.
While encouraged by the team’s progress, Ahmad remained cautious over medal expectations.
After returning with four silver and six bronze medals at the previous SUKMA, Sarawak is targeting five silver and three bronze medals this year.
“I don’t dare talk about gold medals yet but what I can promise is that we will do our very best to achieve the targets we have set,” he added.
Ahmad also urged his athletes to remain disciplined and focused as they enter the final stretches of preparations.
“Stay disciplined, stay focused and carry the ‘Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban’ spirit as motivation to achieve success in Selangor.
“To the people of Sarawak, don’t worry. We will do our very best to ensure our state flag flies proudly in Selangor. Keep us in your prayers and wish us success,” he said.
