KUCHING: Traditional Sarawakian rhythms stole the show at the Kids Got Talent Malaysia 2025 Grand Finals when SJ Borneo, a sibling duo from Sarawak, clinched the National Champion title in the Singing with Music Instruments category.
Shawn and Jane Thien, known on stage as SJ Borneo, wowed judges and audiences alike with their captivating bilingual performance of ‘Anak Kampung’, blending the soulful sounds of the Bornean Sape’ and African drum with choreographed dance and harmonious vocals.
Their standout performance earned them not only the national title but also a Free Access Audition Pass to America’s Got Talent Season 21, marking a proud moment for Sarawak’s musical heritage on a national platform.
Nearly 400 acts from across the country competed in this year’s edition, with contestants showcasing talents in singing, dancing, musical instruments, face-changing (Bian Lian), and public speaking.
SJ Borneo first caught attention at the Sarawak state auditions on March 22, where their creative mashup of the Kenyah song ‘Lan E’ and Mandarin classic ‘The Moon Represents My Heart’ secured them a Golden Pass to the national stage.
In Kuala Lumpur, the duo’s seamless fusion of African percussion and traditional string melodies, paired with their Malay–Mandarin vocals, moved the judges and audience alike, earning a standing ovation from several music professionals in attendance.
“We are incredibly grateful and thrilled,” the siblings said after their win.
“This victory proves that Borneo’s traditional culture can shine beyond regional borders.”
They also expressed appreciation for their support system.
“To our family, friends, and mentors, thank you for standing by us. Your belief in our dream gave us the courage to carry Sarawak’s cultural legacy onto this stage.”
With eyes now set on the international spotlight, SJ Borneo is poised to bring the sounds of Borneo to a global audience.
