KUCHING: Sarawak has signalled its readiness to support efforts to bring ONE Championship to its shores, amid rising interest in combat sports such as muay thai.
Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the strong passion among fans and local practitioners reflects Sarawak’s real potential as a host.
However, he stressed that initiatives to organise such large-scale events must first be driven by sports associations and the private sector.
“My ministry is always prepared to assist, including providing financial support, logistics and facilities, but the process of obtaining international accreditation and approvals must be applied for by the relevant sports bodies.
“From the ministry’s side, we are always ready to give support, but the application and initial steps must come from the associations and interested private sector parties,” he said during a press conference at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex today.
According to him, Sarawak has adequate facilities to host international-level events such as ONE Championship.
“These include Stadium Perpaduan, the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) and several other venues such as in Sri Aman,” he said.
