KUCHING: The Sarawak Silat Festival organised by Rumpun Silat Sarawak (Kuching Division), wrapped up yesterday (Nov 23) after two days at the Godown Amphitheatre.
Crowds were treated to a rich showcase of Sarawak Malay martial arts and traditional music.
In a recent statement, the organisers said the festival was officially launched on Saturday (Nov 22) by Abang Mohammad Hadi Abang Shafie, representing the Sarawak Arts Council (MSS) acting chief executive officer, who highlighted that the well-managed and disciplined organisation of the event reflects the strength and capability of local institutions in uplifting the state’s martial heritage.
“Events like this are not just performance stages — they are platforms for unity, character-building, and the continuation of a legacy passed down through generations,” said Abang Mohammad Hadi.
He also expressed MSS’s pride in supporting the festival through the mySeni grant, in line with its mission to promote the growth and sustainability of local arts and culture.
He further commended the event director, Abdul Taib Yusup, Chairman of Rumpun Silat Sarawak (Kuching Division), for his solid commitment and professional handling of the festival.
The ceremony was graced by Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) acting director Mohamad Faisal Adenan.
During the event, Fazzruddin presented the Anugerah Tokoh Guru Silat Kebangsaan Malaysia to Rumpun Silat Sarawak president Haneef Ali, a recognition previously conferred by PESAKA on Oct 25.
The award honours his significant contributions to strengthening and advancing the silat scene in Sarawak.
The festival wrapped up last night with an overwhelming response from both local and out-of-state visitors, as well as silat practitioners, marking a successful two-day celebration that further elevates the cultural heritage of the Sarawak Malay community.
