KUCHING: Singapore is planning to establish a consular office in Sarawak, with a pre-opening expected in the near term while a suitable location in Kuching is being finalised.
The matter was conveyed during a courtesy call by Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon on Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at his official residence in Petra Jaya here on Monday (Jan 19).
Wan Junaidi was briefed on the proposal to open a Singapore consular office to facilitate trade, investment and people-to-people ties between Sarawak and Singapore.
It was understood that the consular office is currently in the process of identifying a strategic location, with preparatory arrangements for a pre-opening expected to take place in the near future.
During the more than hour-long meeting, both sides also discussed broader areas of cooperation, including regional collaboration in the green economy and renewable energy initiatives currently being developed in Sarawak.
Tourism cooperation was also raised, with discussions focusing on efforts to attract more visitors from Singapore, given Sarawak’s natural assets and unique tourism offerings.
Wan Junaidi expressed hope that strategic cooperation between Sarawak and Singapore would continue to be strengthened to support sustainable economic growth and long-term prosperity for both sides.
Also present were counsellor (political) Charlene Chan, secretary (political) Valerie Lim, and director of the Sarawak Regional Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia Datuk Fenny Nuli.
