KUCHING: Sarawakians of all ages are encouraged to step onto the court and try squash, as the Squash Talent Identification Search 2025 concluded with an open invitation for beginners, novices and elite players alike to join upcoming programmes and competitions.
The closing ceremony at the Sarawak Squash Centre today was officiated by Sarawak Sports Corporation’s (SSC) acting Chief Executive Officer, Khairul Nizam Morshidi, who praised the enthusiasm, effort and determination shown by participants throughout the programme.
“It gives me great joy to stand here at the close of our Squash Talent Identification Search. We have seen inspiring effort, determination and passion from all our participants,” he said in his address.
Khairul stressed that squash was more than just a game, describing it as “a test of agility, discipline, resilience, and mental strength”.

He added that the programme was designed to give opportunities to individuals from all backgrounds, noting that talent was only the beginning and that proper guidance and perseverance were needed to transform raw potential into excellence.
“I would like to sincerely thank all participants, coaches, parents and supporters for making this event a success. I hope there will be more programmes like this in the near future where we can find more players and develop squash as a fun and engaging sport,” he said.
Meanwhile, Squash Racquets Association of Sarawak’s (SRAS’) President, Lucy Read, echoed the call for inclusivity, inviting those who had never played squash before to take up the sport.
“For those of you who have never heard of squash, never touched a racquet or a ball, this is your opportunity. We have coaches, we have courts here – all free of charge.
“All you need to do is register with us after today’s event, and you can join a training programme tailored to your standard,” she said.
Lucy assured that the talent search would not be a one-off event but a continuous programme at the Sarawak Squash Centre, with support from SSC and the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSN).
She added that SRAS aimed not only to focus on junior development but also to cater to players of all levels, including beginners, SUKMA athletes, state players, veterans, and even parents.
Looking ahead, Lucy revealed a packed calendar of activities, including the Cahya Mata Sarawak Squash Invitational 2025 from November 28 to 30.
The tournament will feature categories such as Doubles U-21, Doubles Open, and the Audrey Smith Girls’ Under-19 Trophy (for Sarawakians only).
Other categories include the Masters Individual (above 45), Veterans Individual (above 55), Novices, as well as the Azlan Iskandar Trophy (Men’s U-23), ensuring opportunities for players across different levels and age groups.
“That’s a lot of activities for every category. If you are interested, start now. In two to three months’ time, you can already take part in a novice competition,” she encouraged.
