KUCHING: Sarawak’s stage bus services are set for a major upgrade as the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP) Sarawak implements a new policy requiring all stage buses to be equipped with GPS and Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETM), effective Nov 1.
LPKP Sarawak chairman Michael Kong said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise and improve the efficiency of the state’s public transport system.
“Every year, LPKP Sarawak provides subsidies to our stage bus operators under the Integrated Stage Bus Subsidy Fund (ISBSF). With a total fund size of RM5 million, this initiative helps cover operating costs such as rent, salaries, vehicle maintenance, and other essential expenses,” he said in a statement.
Kong said the installation of GPS units will allow the board to track buses, ensure they follow designated routes and schedules, and enhance operational efficiency.
ETM devices, meanwhile, will facilitate payment collection and provide accurate ridership data to support better planning of bus services statewide.
“Recognising that these devices come at a significant cost approximately RM800 per month per bus, LPKP Sarawak will fully cover the expenses under the ISBSF, ensuring that stage bus operators can upgrade their buses without bearing any additional costs,” he added.
Kong said he has met with stage bus operators in Kuching, Sibu and Miri recently to brief them on the new policy and secure their commitment. He said more than 100 buses have already signed on.
“We look forward to a modernised and more efficient stage bus industry in Sarawak once these GPS and ETM devices are fully installed. This initiative reflects our commitment to improving public transport, supporting operators, and providing better services for the people of Sarawak,” he said.
