LIMBANG: The Sarawak Government has stepped in to build the missing link in the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road Phase 2 (SSLR2), ensuring continuous connectivity in the northern region.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the project would connect Sarawak, Sabah and neighbouring Brunei, while also contributing to wider ASEAN integration.
He stressed that the federal and state governments shared the commitment to deliver seamless mobility, which would strengthen economic and social ties across Borneo.
“This road will not only connect Sarawak to Sabah but also to Brunei, which is an important link for ASEAN development, especially with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim serving as ASEAN Chairman this year.
“With this project, the people of northern Sarawak, who deserve proper access, will be better connected for their economic activities.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the federal government for implementing this project in the north,” he said.
Abang Johari said this during the launching of the SSLR2 project at Nanga Medamit today, which was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Premier explained that Sarawak had stepped in to build the missing link in SSLR2, reflecting close cooperation between the state and federal governments.
He said SSLR2 would complement Sarawak’s coastal road programme, creating a continuous loop from Miri to Lawas, and extending to Marudi, Mulu and Gunung Muda.
As such, he assured that road connectivity would be supported by electricity and water supply projects funded through Sarawak’s allocation under Sarawak Water.
“This is our approach to accelerate development in northern Sarawak, including Baram, for the benefit of the people.
“With good roads, electricity and water supply, economic activities including tourism and agriculture will continue to be strengthened,” he said.
SSLR2 covers a 335-kilometre alignment and is scheduled for completion by June 2029.
Approved by the federal government in 2023 with an estimated cost of RM7.6 billion, the project covers Miri, Limbang, Lawas and Ba’kelalan.
It is being carried out in packages to ensure quality and timely delivery.
