KUCHING: Sarawak steps into 2026 with renewed optimism and stronger development momentum driven by the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, following a year of tangible socio-economic progress and infrastructure expansion across the State, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

In his New Year message in conjunction with the 2026 Countdown celebration, he said the year 2026 marks an important phase in Sarawak’s journey towards developed-region status by 2030, with greater emphasis on high-impact economic sectors and future-ready infrastructure to support long-term progress.

The Premier said 2025 had seen meaningful improvements in quality of life, connectivity and digital transformation, reflecting the state government’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth.

“Alhamdulillah, with His blessings, we are able once again to welcome the New Year in harmony, gratitude and renewed spirit,” he said.

Abang Johari highlighted that more than 1,000 kilometres of new and upgraded roads had been completed statewide, while key sections of the Pan Borneo Highway are now fully operational, improving travel safety, shortening journey time, and opening up new economic opportunities in both urban and rural areas.

He said access to clean water, electricity and internet coverage continues to expand, while Sarawak’s digital transformation was being strengthened through world-class data centres, wider application of AI and cloud technology, and a more efficient, user-friendly e-government system.

To ensure that development benefits the people holistically, human capital development remains central to Sarawak’s progress, the Premier stressed.

He noted that TVET training, scholarship programmes and the implementation of the Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) beginning 2026 would enable more Sarawakian students to pursue quality education without financial barriers.

At the same time, the Sarawak Government will continue supporting vulnerable households through the ‘Sumbangan Keperluan Asas Sarawak’ (SKAS), which has been allocated RM640 million for 2026 to help ease the cost-of-living burden.

Abang Johari also reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability, including the protection of forests, rivers and biodiversity, as well as the continued development of clean energy initiatives for future generations.

“Unity remains Sarawak’s greatest strength. Development may be built with technology and capital, but the true strength of Sarawak lies in the hearts of its people who stand united,” he said.

He added that the commencement of AirBorneo operations this year would further enhance air connectivity, boost tourism and trade, and improve mobility for the people.

Abang Johari expressed appreciation to Sarawak’s leadership and the people for their cooperation and support throughout 2025, calling on all communities regardless of race or religion to continue safeguarding harmony and unity.

“Our journey does not end here. The year 2026 brings more opportunities and development that we will realise together,” he said.
