SARAWAK’S fisheries industry remains a key contributor to the state’s food security and economy, with a combined total of 15,191 fishermen and fish farmers across the marine, inland and aquaculture sectors.
Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom said the industry produced 106,715 metric tonnes of fisheries products valued at RM1.4 billion in 2025.

“However, as of Oct 2025, Sarawak imported RM537.5 million worth of fisheries products but exported only RM169 million. Recognising this trade imbalance, my ministry will continue to undertake various strategic initiatives to strengthen the aquaculture subsector,” he said in his ministerial winding up speech during the DUN Sitting today.
He said under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the ministry will intensify upgrading works at 12 inland fisheries stations to boost fish fry production and capacity building.
He said among the key efforts is the expansion of the Semariang Batu Inland Fisheries Station’s production capacity from three million to nine million fish fry to support aquaculture development.
Rundi added that the State Farmers’ Organisation Sarawak is also enhancing red and black tilapia fry production at the Ridan Inland Fisheries Station, which serves as the anchor facility.
At the same time, he said the ministry is exploring collaboration with a reputable private company to further strengthen black tilapia fry production.
