KUCHING: The Sarawak Government is strengthening public sector data governance by developing the Sarawak Data Governance Framework (SDGF) to guide more systematic and effective management, sharing, and integrity of government data.
Deputy State Secretary (Operation) Datuk Hii Chang Kee said the availability of manageable and easily accessible data not only strengthens government information management, but can also attract more researchers to conduct research, thus assisting the government in formulating more accurate and effective public policies.
“If data is available, more researchers will come to conduct research. When more research is done, more policies can be formulated based on accurate data,” he said at the SDGF Policy Briefing Programme and the Launch of the Data Management Integration and Implementation Project (DMII) organised by the Sarawak Civil Service Digitalisation Unit (SCSDU) held here today (Mar 17).
Hii stressed that data management in the Sarawak Civil Service (SCS) needs to be strengthened because there are still constraints in terms of data management structure and integrity.
In this regard, he said the state government through the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) has developed the SDGF as the guiding principle to ensure that public sector data is managed systematically, transparently and with integrity.
He explained that the framework sets standards, roles and governance structures to ensure that government data can be shared more effectively across ministries and agencies.
Commenting on the programme, the implementation of the DMII project for the agriculture sector will be the initial step in efforts to standardise government data management.
“This implementation was approved last year by the highest decision-making committee, the Digital Government Committee (DGC) which was chaired by State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
“As I have previously mentioned, the agriculture sector is just the beginning and other ministries and agencies must look into this matter. I think you will be enthusiastic after knowing what we are going to implement, as it will greatly assist in your work,” he added.
At the same event, he also witnessed the signing ceremony of the DMII contract between the Sarawak Government and Sarawak Information Systems (SAINS) as well as the Signing Ceremony of the Statement of Commitment between the Ministry for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (MFICORD), the Department of Agriculture Sarawak and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak.
