KUCHING: Sarawak is now in a stronger position in the energy sector following its strategic shift towards green energy, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels such as diesel.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the move, driven by the state government’s long-term vision, has placed Sarawak in a more secure and sustainable energy footing.

He added while petroleum resources, including diesel, remain under the regulation of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), ensuring sufficient supply continues to be a priority.

Global uncertainties and logistical factors could push fuel prices beyond its benchmark, making cost management a key challenge.

“The cost will definitely be higher than usual due to logistics and other factors. Even if the published rate is USD110, it may exceed that. What matters is that we have sufficient supply, and we should be grateful,” he told reporters at the Majlis Jalinan Kasih Aidilfitri programme here last night (Apr 4).

He highlighted that Sarawak’s transition to renewable energy, particularly hydropower, has significantly reduced its dependence on fuel-based generation.

“In Sarawak, about 60 per cent of our energy comes from hydro sources, supported by solar, gas and coal,

“But overall, we are in a comfortable position because we are not dependent on fossil fuels for energy generation,” he added.

In contrast, Sabah still relies heavily on diesel for power generation, making it more vulnerable to price fluctuations and supply shortages.

“The challenge in Sabah is that it depends a lot on diesel. With rising prices and global supply constraints, we must ensure there is enough fuel for power generation, which is crucial for domestic use, industry and business,” he said.

Thus, he added that energy security remains vital for economic growth, noting that stable power supply is essential to sustain development and industrial activities across the region.
