LONDON: Sarawak is set to strengthen its position as a global leader in renewable energy transition through a strategic partnership with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA).
This was the focus of a meeting held on Thursday between Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the State Government delegation, and IHA Chief Executive Officer, Eddie Rich, at a leading hotel here.
Among the key points of discussion were exploring new opportunities in renewable energy beyond hydropower, including solar energy, hydrogen and energy storage.
The meeting also covered the potential for collaboration in producing green hydrogen using renewable energy sources in Sarawak, with the goal of building a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
Additionally, IHA stated that it is currently working on modelling the optimal energy generation mix by taking into account the integration of renewable energy sources, particularly solar.
The collaboration involves the development of a joint energy model with Malaysia and Indonesia to assess the structure of energy prices and the rate of renewable energy adoption.
Also present at the meeting were Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Utility (Sarawak Energy Bhd and PETROS) Deputy Minister, Datuk Ibrahim Baki.
