KUCHING: Sarawak strengthened its bid to become a global technology hub through a strategic partnership between SMD Semiconductor and South Korea’s Rebellions Inc.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the collaboration reflected international confidence in Sarawak’s growing semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem.
“This partnership marks another achievement for SMD Semiconductor following its earlier collaboration with the United Kingdom on sustainable semiconductor manufacturing, workforce training and advanced technology development.
“The agreement would lay the foundation for Sarawak to align with Rebellions’ innovative High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and optimised dataflow chip architecture,” he said.

Abang Johari said this after receiving a courtesy call from Rebellions Inc. founder and chief executive officer Sung Hyun Park at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here Monday (Oct 20).
He noted that Rebellions was a leading AI accelerator company with expertise in HBM technology, enabling the production of high-speed, energy-efficient chips.
Through this synergy, he added, SMD Semiconductor and Rebellions would cooperate in technology transfer, workforce training and high-performance chip development for regional markets.
The Premier said the collaboration aligned with Sarawak’s vision to establish an “Integrated Longhouse Silicon Valley” and support the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which emphasises innovation-driven growth.
He also pointed out that in the next five to 10 years, the aerospace sector would require vast amounts of chips and digital communication technology.
“The ecosystem that will be developed with Rebellions’ support is expected to serve as a major catalyst for Sarawak’s ambition to be a regional high-tech hub,” he added.
