KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak government will study the mechanism to extend the RM15,000 annual financial assistance for students from low-income families to those pursuing studies at public universities across the country.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the assistance will initially be channelled to students enrolled in Sarawak’s four state-owned universities under the free tertiary education scheme, which takes effect next year.

He said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring that every Sarawakian has the opportunity to pursue higher education without financial barriers.

“I had the opportunity to meet our students during the recent Lan Berambeh event. They also requested similar assistance for those from Sarawak who are studying at public universities across the country.

“God willing, as our state’s revenue continues to grow, this will be taken into consideration.

“For now, in understanding the situation faced by Sarawakian students studying in any public or private higher learning institution, the state government is providing Special Financial Assistance for Sarawak Students amounting to RM1,200 per year,” he said.

He said this when delivering his speech during the third session of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas)’ 29th convocation ceremony at DeTAR Putra, Unimas, here today (Nov 4).

The Premier added several other support schemes are also in place to reduce the financial burden of Sarawakian students.

He said these include the Student Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS), which provides RM200 monthly for students renting accommodation in major cities such as Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.

He added that the government also continues to provide book vouchers and free laptops for students from low-income Sarawakian families.
