TOKYO, Japan: Sarawak has put forward three practical areas of regional collaboration aimed at strengthening ASEAN’s hydrogen ecosystem and accelerating Asia’s transition to clean energy.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg outlined the proposals during his keynote address, ‘Sarawak’s Hydrogen Vision: Catalysing Green Growth for ASEAN and Beyond’, at the World Hydrogen Asia Conference 2025 here today.

The proposals are a certification platform, shared infrastructure, as well as technology and talent exchange.

He said the first involves establishing a hydrogen certification platform led by Sarawak to reduce trade barriers and build confidence in the regional hydrogen market.

“This platform can serve as an entry point towards a broader ASEAN-level certification system,” he said.

His second proposal focuses on shared infrastructure, calling for joint investment in export terminals, storage facilities and conversion plants across Asean and Asia-Pacific.

Meanwhile his third focuses on technology exchange and human capital development, including joint research and development (R&D), training programmes and innovation clusters.

“We must build not just facilities, but the knowledge and skills ecosystem to support this transition,” he added.

Abang Johari said despite being a subnational region, Sarawak maintains a global mindset and is committed to real, on-the-ground hydrogen development.

He said the state is actively building trust, shaping long-term value chains, and laying the foundation for a resilient clean energy ecosystem.

“The hydrogen economy is not a race, but a journey we share,” he added.

“It gives regions like Sarawak the chance to contribute to global decarbonisation while creating jobs, opportunities and partnerships.”
