KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) successfully conducted a Leadership Training Programme for all divisional committee members from across Sarawak, with around 72 participants taking part in the full session held at Harbour View Hotel, here.
The main objective of the programme was to strengthen leadership skills among union committee members while enhancing governance efficiency and financial management within the organization.
STU president Kullin Djayang expressed his appreciation to the Madani government for its financial assistance of RM500 to all civil servants and the increased allocation for the education sector.
“We are grateful for the government’s commitment to education, with funding raised from RM64.2 billion in 2025 to RM66.2 billion in 2026,” Kullin said this at the training programme.
“We also hope that the RM520 million allocation for dilapidated schools in Sarawak and Sabah will be distributed efficiently to improve classroom and teachers’ quarters facilities, ensuring more effective teaching and learning sessions while safeguarding teachers’ welfare.”
The training covered various administrative aspects including office management, correspondence, minute-taking, and focused activity planning aimed at recruiting new members and enhancing members’ welfare.
Participants were also briefed on key provisions in the STU Constitution to ensure more effective governance.
“Financial management was another area emphasised to prevent any form of leakage or wastage, with trainers highlighting the importance of accountability in handling union funds.”
Additionally, the participants received exposure to protocol and event management, ensuring that official events can be conducted smoothly and professionally.
They were also introduced to Artificial Intelligence tools to help them face modern, technology-driven challenges in the education sector.
Meanwhile, the STU Women’s Bureau invited a guest speaker to address the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace, reflecting the union’s commitment to promoting a safe and respectful working environment for all educators.
