KUCHING: The Sarawak government will continue to prioritise environmental protection over the exploration of the state’s mineral resources, despite being listed among the top 10 states with the highest mineral reserves in Malaysia.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stressed the importance of exercising caution in the mining industry, saying that Sarawak has other viable industries to explore.
While the state holds significant resources, including rare earth elements (REE), he pointed out that other states such as Kedah, Terengganu and Perlis have larger REE deposits.
“Mining requires thorough research because it can impact the environment.
“Why should we engage in an industry that may jeopardise the environment when we have other clean industries?”
He told the media this after officiating at the earth-breaking ceremony of the new medical and commercial building of the Che Hia Khor Moral Uplifting Society Kidney Foundation today (Dec 30).
Abang Johari further clarified that Sarawak is not in a ‘desperate situation’ to exploit its mineral resources.
He stressed that the state is committed to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
“We have other sources of income. Let the minerals remain untouched for now.”
In June, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan revealed that the state is home to a vast array of valuable minerals, with an estimated worth of RM1.25 trillion.
He said that this significant mineral potential offers Sarawak an opportunity to invest in the mining industry, which could generate substantial returns for the economy.
The valuable minerals include gold, non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE), high-quality silica sand and bauxite.
“According to the Department of Minerals and Geoscience, Sarawak’s rich mineral reserves hold immense value,” Awang Tengah said.
