KUCHING: Sarawak set to take centre stage in Southeast Asia’s construction industry as it hosts the inaugural International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo Edition from May 13 to 14 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Organised by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia in collaboration with Qube Integrated Malaysia Sdn Bhd, this landmark event marks the first time in ICW’s 37-year history that it will be held outside of Kuala Lumpur.

CIDB Malaysia Corporate Communications Division general manager Noryani Ismail said the event will feature conferences, exhibitions, networking sessions, and competitions.

She said ICW serves as a premier platform for industry stakeholders to share knowledge, showcase innovations, and explore strategic collaborations, both locally and internationally.

Two major highlights include the Construction Sustainability Summit and the Build Expo Exhibition.

“The Construction Sustainability Summit has limited space with only 300 seats available, so early registration is encouraged to secure a spot. Participation is open to individuals from across Malaysia and the region.

“To attend the summit, all you need to do is register online and there is a minimum fee of RM150. We also welcome and invite local corporations or organisations interested in sponsoring students from local universities to participate in our conference.

“We believe it’s incredibly beneficial for the younger generation to learn from our experienced speakers,” she told a press conference at CIDB Convention Centre Sarawak here today (April 15).

Among the summit’s notable speakers are representatives from Sarawak’s strategic agencies such as SEDC and SEB, along with industry players like Gamuda and international experts.

One of the architects set to take stage at the event is Prof Patrick Bellew, renowned for integrating low and net-zero carbon engineering solutions in architecture; Prof Neil Thomas, an expert in innovative materials in construction; John Hardy, founder of Bali’s Bamboo School; Phyllis Chong from Rubner Timber Engineering, specialising in glue-laminated timber construction; and Prof Resdiansyah, senior advisor for Infrastructure and Regional Development to the Executive Office of the President of Indonesia.

A business networking session will be held on the second day to foster collaboration between participants and speakers.

Meanwhile, the Build Expo Exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will feature nearly 80 booths, showcasing cutting-edge construction technologies and sustainable solutions. Visitors can also attend pocket talks and engage with exhibitors.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate the event on May 13.

Themed “Innovative Construction for a Sustainable Future,” ICW Borneo is set to highlight East Malaysia’s strategic role in driving sustainable infrastructure and fostering regional collaboration.

With an expected turnout of around 3,000 visitors, ICW Borneo aims to be a key prelude to ICW 2025 and position Sarawak as a hub for sustainable construction and innovation.
