KUCHING: The Sarawak Government will host a special state-level Labour Day gathering on May 18 at Hikmah Exchange here in recognition of the vital contributions of workers across various sectors in the state.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, said this inaugural event at the state level is aimed at honouring the dedication and commitment of Sarawak’s workforce.

He explained that although Labour Day is typically observed on 1 May, the event was rescheduled to a later date to ensure broader participation from stakeholders.

It is expected to be officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“Labour Day is indeed on May 1, but due to timing constraints and our intention to have the Premier officiate the event, we have decided to celebrate it on 18 May. The venue will be at Hikmah Exchange.

“We have extended invitations to representatives from employers, workers’ associations, trade unions, as well as staff from both federal and state public services,” he said during the “Juh Randau” interview session by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) recently.

He also highlighted that workers from the federal, state and private sectors would be recognised during the celebration as a gesture of appreciation for their contributions.

Gerawat expressed optimism that the event could evolve into an annual celebration in the future.
