KUCHING: Sarawak is set to open a performing arts centre by the end of 2026 or early 2027, providing a dedicated venue for cultural performances, dance, music, and other arts activities.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the development of the centre will serve as an official space to showcase cultural heritage, dance, music, and performing arts.
“I want to see Sarawak developed in this aspect culturally and artistically.
“When the time comes and our performing arts or cultural arts centre has been presented or when the draft is completed, which is expected to be ready by the end of next year or early 2027, we will have an iconic venue in Sarawak where we can showcase our culture and arts,” he said.
He said this during the Final Round of the Traditional Malay Song and Dance Competition opening ceremony held in conjunction with the Sarawak Arts Festival at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here, last night (Nov 14).
He added that the tourism sector is now increasingly focused on cultural experiences, where travellers no longer visit solely for shopping, but to witness firsthand the lifestyle, uniqueness, and artistry of a state or country.
In addition, Abdul Karim suggested that the Sarawak Arts Festival be made a permanent event in the state’s tourism calendar to ensure better planning and to give visitors more opportunities to enjoy the well-prepared performances.
“My hope is that this arts festival will be included in our tourism calendar.
“If it is included in the tourism calendar, at least for that particular year, we will know exactly when it will be held,” he added.
