KUCHING: The performance of STPM candidates in Sarawak this year has seen a decline, prompting the State Education Department to take proactive steps in identifying the root causes and improving future outcomes.

According to Sarawak education director Omar Mahli, the department will conduct a thorough review of both internal and external factors that may have contributed to the decline in student performance.

“To address the situation, the department is now focusing on equipping candidates with effective answering techniques while also enhancing the training provided to Form Six teachers.”

Omar made these remarks during a press conference at the 2024 STPM Examination Results Announcement Ceremony held at the Yayasan Sarawak, on Tuesday (June 24).

He also acknowledged that a shortage of Form Six teachers continues to be a concern.

However, he noted that the issue is currently being managed by reassigning teachers from mainstream levels to temporarily fill the vacancies.

Commenting on several schools that had previously performed well but failed to achieve the same standard this year, he said a detailed review would be conducted.

“We will carry out a comprehensive analysis, as there may be multiple factors contributing to the change in performance.

“STPM students still have opportunities to improve their results. Once the analysis is complete, we will share the key findings and identify the main contributing factors.”
