KUCHING: In conjunction with National Journalists Day today (May 29), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting media practitioners through international exposure and professional development opportunities.
According to Premier, a special programme is currently being prepared to send local journalists abroad for an executive training initiative aimed at enhancing journalistic standards and expanding global perspectives.
He made the announcement while speaking to reporters after the Asia Carbon Conference at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
“My colleagues and I, together with the leadership, would like to wish all journalists a Happy National Journalists Day,” he said.
“I already have a programme in place to assist journalists, and I’ve instructed Datuk Abdullah Saidol to carry it out.”
First announced last year, the initiative is now entering its implementation phase, targeting journalists with relevant backgrounds and qualifications to equip them with global insights and international experience.
“If we are able to provide free education, then surely I can allocate funding to send journalists for this executive programme,” he added.
However, the Premier emphasised that the selection process must be conducted in collaboration with the relevant media organisations.
“We must work together with the journalist associations.
“There needs to be a clear process – who will be selected, and what qualifications are required,” he said.
