KUCHING: Sarawak aims to serve as a model for an Age-Friendly Region by fostering stronger collaboration among agencies to ensure senior citizens are valued and supported.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state is committed to developing inclusive policies that uplift all older Sarawakians regardless of background or location.
He asserted that local authorities would be encouraged to design elder-friendly public spaces, facilities and infrastructure that focus on accessibility, safety and comfort for senior citizens.
“The rise in the number of older persons in Sarawak is both a sign of progress and also a call for action.
“It requires us to strengthen policies on social protection, improve healthcare access and expand community support to meet the needs of the elderly.
“We are moving towards an integrated approach to ageing, linking health and social wellbeing through closer partnerships among hospitals, community centres and local councils,” he said.
Abang Johari said this in a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian when officiating at the Sarawak International Conference on Ageing (SICA) 2025 opening ceremony here today (Oct 28).
The Premier noted that by 2050, one in six people worldwide would be aged 60 and above, with Sarawak also facing the same demographic shift.
As such, he said initiatives such as the Senior Citizens Activity Centre (PAWE), Senior Citizen Service Centre (PPWE), community geriatric services and health promotion programmes would ensure seniors could age in place with dignity.
He stressed that while longer lifespans reflected progress, longevity must be matched with quality of life, dignity and inclusion for all older Sarawakians.
“Every senior citizen, whether in urban centres or rural longhouses, must be given the right care, connection and support.
“That is why the theme of this year’s conference, ‘Ageing with Dignity: Policies for Rights, Inclusion and Social Protection,’ resonates with our aspirations.
“As our society progresses, no one should be left behind. Every older person must be respected, protected and included as part of our state,” he stressed.
