KUCHING: Sarawak will be establishing its own studio at Salak to further develop its creative industry.
In announcing this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that by having a Sarawak-owned studio, it will be able to “challenge” Bollywood.
Therefore, he added, in order to encourage and develop the industry, the Sarawak government will give financial assistance to those that want to make drama.
“I have seen our Sarawakians shooting a drama at Telok Melano. As it is still raw, we have to train our people.
“The children of Sarawak have talents that we can polish in this new industry. Aside from being able to introduce our culture to other countries that are friendly to us, this industry can also be a new business that can generate income,” he said.
He said this when attending the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Award Giving Ceremony at the Riverside Majestic Hotel here last night (Jan 13).
Having said that, he pointed out that such an industry can also promote the fashion industry.
“If our actors and actresses become popular, their fashion will be a trend among the people; hence, we will be able to produce new fashion that will further expand our market overseas.
“That is why, as far as the government is concerned, we will try to give financial assistance in this new industry.
“From there, we will be able to add another source of revenue for our region,” he said.
