KUCHING: The state government’s announcement of a one-off RM700 incentive for registered media practitioners reflects the state’s recognition of the vital role played by journalists, photographers, editors and media personnel in ensuring reliable and timely information reaches the public.
Sarawak Tribune editor-in-chief Aden Nagrace said he welcomes the initiative, adding that it is a timely acknowledgement of the industry’s contributions.
“This gesture may be one-off, but its meaning goes beyond monetary value. It is an appreciation of the long hours, sacrifices and commitment that media practitioners put in every day to inform and serve the people,” he said in a statement today (Dec 3).
Aden said the move also reinforces the importance of strengthening Sarawak’s media ecosystem, especially at a time when credible reporting is crucial to public understanding and socio-economic progress.
“We would like to thank the Premier and the state government for acknowledging the contribution of Sarawak’s media fraternity, as well as for continuing to support a strong and professional media landscape,” he said.
The incentive will be distributed to members of the media fraternity registered under the six media associations in Sarawak as of Dec 1 this year.
However, Aden noted that not all editors and sub-editors are currently registered with any media association.
“We hope future mechanisms will consider ways to ensure that all media professionals, including those not registered with associations, are also included so that recognition is more holistic,” he added.
