KUCHING: The Sarawak Government is being encouraged to lead the way in using electric vehicles (EVs) by taking advantage of the surplus electricity in the state.
In a statement yesterday, Michael Kong, the special assistant to the Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, said there’s a lot of surplus electricity because of the many hydroelectric power plants.
“This extra electricity makes EVs a good choice for people in Sarawak. One common worry about EVs is that they can’t go very far on a single charge. But with all this extra electricity, the state can set up lots of places to charge EVs. This will help people feel more comfortable about how far they can travel, and make EVs a practical choice for people in Sarawak,” Kong explained.
He said that using EVs would help the environment because the hydroelectric power plants make clean energy, and EVs don’t create any pollution.
“Having this entire surplus electricity means the state could start making EVs. This would create jobs and make companies want to build places where EVs can be charged. If the state makes the right rules and gives good rewards, Sarawak could become a leader in selling EVs.
“Instead of waiting for private companies to do everything and spend lots of money, it’s time for the Sarawak government to take the lead and support this idea,” he added.
