SIBU: The merger of Sarawak’s three water entities is expected to be officially launched in June by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, says Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

He said the integration work involving the three entities—namely Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board (SWB), and Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (formerly LAKU Management Sdn Bhd)—is currently being finalised and analysed.

“An in-depth study has been conducted, and based on the preliminary information I’ve received, I believe (its staff) will be given a better offer.

“There will be pensions, better salaries, and I’ve also been informed that the EPF (Employees Provident Fund) benefits will be improved.

“However, I cannot disclose the details just yet, as (all staff) will be officially informed,” he said in his speech at a SWB Hari Raya gathering hosted at a hotel here last night (Apr 25).

Julaihi added that there will be town hall sessions on the merger involving all staff to provide a better understanding of the plan.

“So for those of you who are still feeling uncertain, please know that we are committed to looking after your welfare. We know what is best for you.

“As I said earlier, this consolidation is based on our Sarawak model, not something imported from elsewhere, because we know that what we do here in Sarawak is the best for Sarawak. It may not be the best for those outside Sarawak, but that’s the formula we are using,” he stressed.

At the gathering, a total of 31 SWB staff received the Outstanding Service Award (APC) for 2023 and 2024, while 10 others received the Long Service Award for having served 20 and 30 years respectively.

Julaihi extended his congratulations to all award recipients and also encouraged those who were not listed to not give up.

He believed that everyone has contributed and played an important role in ensuring that all projects implemented by SWB run smoothly.
