KUCHING: Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd handed over RM325,000 in business zakat to Baitulmal Sarawak as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment towards community wellbeing and Sarawak’s socio-economic development.

The zakat handover ceremony was witnessed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at his office on Level 5 of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building today.

Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said it was the company’s first business zakat contribution since the establishment of Sarawak Water as a single entity in August last year.

He said apart from fulfilling its tax obligations to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), the zakat contribution also reflects the company’s corporate responsibility towards the community through Baitulmal Sarawak.

“Sarawak Water comprises Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board and LAKU Management, which were merged into one entity and launched by the Premier last year.

“Today marks the first time Sarawak Water has contributed business zakat to Baitulmal Sarawak, amounting to RM325,000,” he told reporters after the handover ceremony.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Water Acting CEO Malseni Jamal said the payment of business zakat forms part of the company’s corporate responsibility in sharing its blessings and assisting those in need.

“Sarawak Water remains committed to implementing sustainable and inclusive corporate responsibilities.

“This business zakat contribution not only fulfills the company’s obligation, but also reflects our concern for the community while supporting the socio-economic development of Sarawak,” she said.

She also added that Sarawak Water will continue strengthening its role as a responsible and integrity-driven organisation that prioritises the wellbeing of the people in line with the state government’s aspirations.
