KUCHING: The ESG Smart Pole real-time air quality monitoring first introduced at Kuching Park and Palmairum Park is expected to support healthier lifestyles.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the project is well aligned with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS), which places strong emphasis on sustainability, digital transformation and people-centred development.

“The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Smart Pole is the first of its kind in Kuching to provide real-time air quality monitoring in public recreational spaces.

“This is a significant step forward, as air quality is closely linked to public health, especially for children, senior citizens and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the ESG Smart Pole launching ceremony at MBKS Lobby today.

He added that for the pilot phase, two strategic locations, namely Kuching Park and Palmairum Park have been selected due to their status as among the most popular green spaces in the city, serving as key areas for recreation, exercise and community interaction.

“Through the digital display board installed on the Smart Pole, park users can easily view the current air quality status in real time.

“This allows members of the public to make informed decisions on whether conditions are suitable for physical activities such as walking, jogging or exercising outdoors,” he added.

He stressed that this is particularly beneficial for vulnerable groups and during periods of haze or fluctuating environmental conditions.

“This initiative represents an important shift towards preventive and proactive public health management.

“Instead of responding only after health issues arise, we are empowering the public with timely information so they can better protect their health and well-being.

“At the same time, this project clearly demonstrates how Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles can be implemented meaningfully at the local level,” he said.

Looking ahead, Dr Sim hoped that this pilot project will serve as a catalyst for the expansion of smart monitoring and ESG-driven infrastructure across Kuching and other parts of Sarawak.

“With reliable data, local authorities and policymakers will be better equipped to plan interventions, strengthen urban resilience and improve overall quality of life,” he said.
