KUCHING: Despite finishing as runners-up to Selangor, the Sarawak women’s cricket team has shown progress and resilience, with more match exposure needed to build confidence among the state’s young players.

In the final of the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) Senior Women’s Inter-State T20 Championship 2025 held at Bayuemas Oval, Klang, yesterday (Oct 26), Sarawak bowled first, with Selangor posting 148 runs for the loss of three wickets in 20 overs.

Their chase fell short as Sarawak managed only 107 runs, losing by 41 runs.

Kabita Kunwar was the top scorer with 50 runs, followed by Puja Mahato with 19.

Head of Development for Sarawak Cricket, Haikal Harith, commended the team’s effort against more experienced opposition from West Malaysia, noting that regular matches are key to helping the young players grow in confidence and skill.

“This team did well against players who have more exposure and match experience.

“To improve, we need more matches, especially for our young players to develop their confidence,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted today (Oct 27).

The Sarawak squad comprised Kabita Kunwar, Nur Qaireen Syakira, Puja Mahato, Rubina Chetry, Nur Dania Syuhada, Annisa Fateehah Yasri, Fatin Nazirah Abdullah, Nurazmiera Aqilah Abdullah, Nurul Amirah Shuhada, Aina Umira Amin and Aini Rajeni Jalani.

This marked a rematch between the two sides after Sarawak defeated Selangor in the previous edition of the tournament.
