KUCHING: Sarawak Women’s Rugby players have entered Phase 1 Test Matches in Sandakan as the team continues its intensive training programme designed to test skills, improve decision-making, and build competitive readiness.

Head coach Sylvia Alexander Lian said the ongoing phase at Eagles Rugby Club, which runs from March 25 to 29, is a key step in assessing the players’ development under match conditions.

“The girls have been training consistently, been through fitness tests, and now we will be testing their skills.

“So far, the players, though they are young, display high fighting spirit, passion for the game, great discipline and, most of all, excellent teamwork,” said Sylvia.

She added that the squad has shown encouraging progress since the start of their training programme, particularly in terms of discipline, teamwork and fighting spirit.

“Everyone is working hard and fighting for their spot in the team,” she told Sarawak Tribune when contacted today.

The squad, made up of players aged between 15 and 20, is currently undergoing long-term development focused on building tactical understanding, skill refinement and match readiness as they progress through the selection phase.

“In long-term player development, this age group ranges between 15 to 20 years old. Our aim is to train them to compete, focusing on increased specialisation, tactical refinement and competitive preparation,” she added.

The team’s preparations will continue to be fine-tuned as they build towards upcoming competitive commitments, including the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026.
