SERIAN: The second edition of the Sarawak Youth Index study is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the study is still ongoing due to its extensive scope, covering youth across 45 districts throughout the state.
“The research is being conducted by professionals, including university lecturers, who are going down to the ground in every district.
“It will take several months to complete,” he said when speaking to the media after officiating at the state-level National Youth Day 2025 at Serian Conference Centre (SCC) here today.
Abdul Karim explained that the study is being carried out in collaboration with the Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES), an agency under the Youth and Sports Ministry.
The first Sarawak Youth Index was conducted in 2018, and this year’s follow-up aims to capture updated insights on youth well-being, satisfaction with government policies, and other indicators.
“The gap between 2018 and 2025 is quite long, so it’s important for us to understand how the youth feel about various issues, particularly regarding their quality of life,” he added.
Sarawak is one of only three states in Malaysia, apart from Sabah and Johor, to undertake this form of youth index research.
Abdul Karim previously reported that the latest study focuses on six key domains, including education, the economy, and mental and physical well-being.
It also covers political socialisation, nationhood and democracy, values and identity, as well as media and digital citizenship.
