JULAU: Sarawak’s younger generation must master English, mathematics and science to remain competitive in the state’s fast-evolving, innovation-driven economy, said Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
He said proficiency in the three core subjects is essential as Sarawak advances its hydrogen economy, digital transformation, and science and technology sectors, all of which require a highly skilled workforce.
“Don’t limit your dreams of success to just Sarawak or Malaysia. Seize opportunities wherever they may be, gain as much experience as possible, and when the time comes, bring that expertise home to develop this state,” he told reporters after making a special visit to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Nanga Meluan recently.
Sagah encouraged students not to shy away from studying mathematics, science and English, stressing that competence in these subjects would open doors to careers in engineering, technology, scientific research and other high-value industries.
He said the younger generation must equip themselves with relevant knowledge and skills to adapt to changing economic demands and remain competitive in the global job market.
According to him, the Sarawak Government’s free tertiary education initiative also prioritises high-demand fields such as engineering, technical disciplines, medicine, law, finance and accounting to produce quality talent capable of supporting the state’s long-term development.
At the same time, he said psychology should not be overlooked, noting that growing mental health challenges in modern society have increased the need for more trained specialists in the field.
