KUCHING: Telford Engan Tan, a 19-year-old law student and youth advocate from here, has been named one of the Top 10 Malaysians selected for the prestigious Malaysiakini Young Creator Fellowship 2025.
Telford, a member of The Sarawak Initiatives’ Aspiring Leaders programme, was chosen from over 120 nationwide applicants for the highly competitive fellowship, which aims to nurture the next generation of journalist-influencers and content creators.
His selection followed a rigorous two-day media training workshop and a storytelling video pitch titled ‘Young Change-Maker’.
Telford whose video submission focused on unity, cultural heritage, and Indigenous identity from the Sarawakian perspectiv said that Malaysia’s strength lies in its cultural diversity.
“More than just storytelling, youth participation in journalism empowers us to question, reflect, and shape the narratives that define our future.
“We need more young Sarawakians to be aware and involved,” he added in a statement on Friday.
Telford hopes to use the platform to amplify rural voices and push for more inclusive national narratives.
As part of the fully funded fellowship from July 16-18 in Kuala Lumpur, Telford will tour national media agencies including Media Prima, RTM, Astro Awani and BERNAMA, and receive personalised mentorship from award-winning journalists.
He will also present his project at Monash University Malaysia before editors and policymakers and compete for a share of RM17,000 in awards.
Endorsed by the Ministry of Communications Malaysia, the fellowship aims to elevate youth voices in building a more inclusive and responsible media landscape.
