KUCHING: The state’s progress in enhancing the people’s quality of life has inspired young Sarawakians to envision a brighter future while preserving its unique identity at the same time.
On the occasion of Sarawak Day, we spoke to young Sarawakians about what it means to them, their future aspirations for the state, and the opportunities they hope for.

Sarawak Day celebrates the diverse ethnic communities and rich history of Sarawak. Being part of a united community with people from different ethnic backgrounds has made me appreciate the harmony and mutual respect that define Sarawak.
It emphasises the importance of modern development paired with the preservation of culture, heritage, and indigenous languages.
I hope infrastructure will be upgraded as it is essential for enhancing residents’ quality of life, while also protecting natural resources for future generations.
I would also like to encourage the younger generation to uphold cultural traditions and gain better access to quality education, as it is crucial for their development and future leadership in local policy-making.

Sarawak Day is about achieving independence with our amazing leaders who fought hard for us to gain independence.
In the future, I hope I will get to see my state flourish, advancing in everything possible while maintaining a great relationship between our leaders and citizens. This partnership is vital in ensuring that our communal interests are represented and that opportunities for collaboration arise consistently. I would also like to see broader job opportunities for the younger generation, which are crucial for stimulating local economic growth.

Sarawak Day emphasises the turning point of Sarawak’s future towards becoming an independent entity, resulting in us being able to enjoy the abundant and rich resources that we have today.
I hope that Sarawak will be increasingly viewed as an entity that is responsible for the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, and that the rights promised to the state will be upheld. Just as we sang “Sarawak dalam Malaysia” in “Ibu Pertiwiku”, the Sarawak anthem, I would also like to encourage the engagement of Sarawak youth in being the backbone of creating a greater Sarawak as a state. Not only by liberalising their voices of opinion and ambition, but also as stakeholders with the ability to shape the future.

Sarawak Day is a day to celebrate Sarawak’s history, culture, unity, and achievements, marking a remembrance of the past and an opportunity to reflect on the aspirations for the future of Sarawak.
I hope the state will continue to grow, become more developed, and provide better opportunities for its people in the future.
I hope the younger generation will have more opportunities in education, job opportunities, technology, and entrepreneurship to build a brighter future.
