KUCHING: Sarawakians were reminded to safeguard the state’s tourism image by ensuring the safety and comfort of visitors.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said any untoward incident against visitors could undermine efforts to attract more travellers.
He noted that Thailand is currently facing a downturn in tourist arrivals, particularly from China, after a series of safety-related incidents caused concern among travellers.
“From media reports, I learned that Thailand is experiencing problems this year. Many Chinese tourists are now worried after a few crime cases involving their countrymen,” he said.
He told reporters this on the sidelines of the Sarawak Regatta-Kuching Waterfront Festival (SR-KWF) 2025, which was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today.
Abdul Karim asserted that the tourism industry is highly sensitive, where news of crimes can quickly spread through media and social platforms, creating fear among potential visitors.
He pointed out that such fears could directly affect arrivals and spending patterns, which would harm the industry and local economy if not addressed properly.
“That is why in Sarawak we must ensure that tourists are not harassed, harmed or face issues like robbery. These incidents can damage our image,” he stressed.
Abdul Karim therefore called on the public to protect the well-being of tourists at all times, ensuring the destination here remains known as a safe place to visit.
