PADAWAN: Sarawakians, particularly community leaders and the younger generation, are urged to deepen their understanding of the state’s independence history to strengthen their sense of identity and nationhood.
Transport Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, said it is crucial for the younger generation to learn about key historical events, such as the handover of power by the last British Governor, Sir Alexander Waddell, and the appointment of Tan Sri Stephen Kalong Ningkan as Sarawak’s first Chief Minister.
“This is important for them to understand that Sarawak once stood as a self-governing territory before becoming part of Malaysia on September 16, 1963.
“Although not often featured in mainstream history, July 22 remains a meaningful milestone in Sarawak’s political autonomy prior to the formation of Malaysia,” he said during the Sarawak Day 2025 Tea Reception at Padawan sub-district recently.
The Mambong Assemblyman also stressed the importance of empowering community leaders (KMKK) to play an active role in addressing poverty and strengthening the local economy, continuing the spirit of struggle that began in the early days of Sarawak’s independence.
