KUCHING: Several Sarawak cardiologists received awards in several categories for scientific research at the National Heart Association Malaysia (NHAM) Congress 2022 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) recently.
Dr Thien Lee Karl of Sarawak Heart Centre (SHC) won the first prize for his research titled ‘Association Between the Novel Biomarker Oxidised LDL/Beta 2 Glycoprotein I Complexes and Coronary Artery Calcification with Cardiovascular Outcomes — a Long Term Prospective Study’.
Also won the first prize was Dr Ling Hwei Sung, also from SHC, for his research titled ‘Characterising and Prognosticating Heart Failure with Improved Ejection Fraction Using NT-proBNP, Growth Differentiation Factor 15 and Global Longitudinal Strain’.
In this regard, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian congratulated the doctors and their team.
“Medicine is a practice of science as well as art. When you are newly graduated, you have a lot of knowledge of science but very little on art of practical medicine.
“You have a lot of art in medicine when you’re senior but you’re behind in the current breakthroughs in science,” he said in a Facebook post.
Dr Sim also stated that when doctors are away at a scientific conference, it is a positive sign for patient care.
“I am privileged to have the opportunity to educate (push you to read, to stay up with the latest scientific publications, particularly online) and to conduct research in order to keep up with scientific advances,” he stated.
Dr Pang Ing Xiang of SHC, Dr Han Bing Chow of SHC, Dr Diana Foo Hui Ping of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) as well as Dr Chung Bui Khiong of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) were among the other cardiologists who won awards at the congress.
