Sarawak’s digital economy contribution to GDP aims to hit RM56.4 billion by 2030

KUCHING: Sarawak is aiming to boost the digital economy contribution to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 20 per cent or approximately RM56.4 billion by 2030.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said with the digital trade in Asean expecting to hit 1 trillion US dollars in the next five years, thus the state is positioning itself as a major player.

“E-commerce is booming, and Sarawak is capitalising on this trend,” he said  in his keynote address titled ‘Sarawak 2030: Architecting Regional Prosperity’ at the Asean Sarawak Business and Economic Forum 2025 ‘Collaborative Growth in Asean’s Evolving Economic Landscape’ at Riverside Majestic Hotel here, today.

Abang Johari, who is also the Finance and New Economy Minister, said the state is making it easier for businesses to expand into new markets especially with the introduction of cross-border digital payment systems and blockchain-enabled trade solutions.

“For investors, Sarawak offers a thriving ecosystem of digital opportunities. Our government has introduced tax incentives for tech startups, funding schemes for digital innovation, and public-private partnerships to drive Industry 4.0 adoption.

“Whether in artificial intelligent (AI), fintech, or smart manufacturing, Sarawak is building a digital economy that will power Asean’s future,” he said.

He added the state government is contributing to Asean’s digital transformation by investing in high-speed connectivity, AI, cloud computing, and smart technologies.

“The rollout of 5G connectivity across Sarawak will enable high-speed digital trade, automation in industries, and better access to financial technology solutions.

“In addition, the recently launched Sarawak AI Innovation Hub is accelerating the development of AI-driven industries, making us a centre for research, innovation, and talent development in the region,” he said.

As digitalisation reshapes global economies, Abang Johari said the state government is committed to fostering a robust digital ecosystem that supports innovation, business growth, and inclusivity.

“With more than RM1 billion allocated for digital infrastructure under Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, we are ensuring that businesses and communities can thrive in the digital era,” he said.
