KUCHING: Sarawak bowler Gillian Lim has made waves on the global stage by topping the rookie standings in the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour with 37,230 points in her debut season.
Her performance not only earned her the Rookie of the Year title but also placed her ahead of strong contenders from Canada and the United States.
“It honestly feels surreal. To be the first Malaysian and part of such a small group of international winners is an incredible honor.
“It’s something I’ll carry with me forever, and it makes me proud to represent my country on this stage,” she told Sarawak Tribune when contacted recently.
Lim expressed hope that her success will inspire others to dream big.
“If you are willing to work hard, take risks, and push yourself beyond your comfort zone, amazing things can happen.
“I want them to believe that they can stand on the same lanes as the best in the world,” she said.
Reflecting on her rookie season, she admitted that victory was far from her original goal.
“Honestly, no. I went into my rookie season wanting to learn, grow, and gain experience. Winning Rookie of the Year was beyond my expectations, but it’s also proof that the hard work and sacrifices were worth it,” she added.
Lim outscored Canada’s Jade Cote, who accumulated 23,615 points, and USA’s Kirsten Moore with 17,645 points, leading in points, earnings, and top-12 finishes throughout the season.
This achievement makes her the first Malaysian and only the fourth international player since the tour’s relaunch to win the coveted honour.
Starting her bowling journey at St Joseph Miri primary and secondary school at just eight years old, Lim quickly showed promise by representing Sarawak in the SUKMA Games and interstates competitions.
