KUCHING: Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) Honorary Secretary Gordon Chung Pei Nan has been appointed as the deputy president of the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA).
The 43-year-old, who has been a driving force in Sarawak’s cricket scene since 2010, expressed pride and determination following his appointment.
“I’m truly honoured by the trust placed in me by the states that voted for me,” he told Sarawak Tribune yesterday (Apr 28).
“At the same time, I understand that this role comes with significant responsibility, and I am committed to giving my best to support the development of cricket in Malaysia.”
Chung highlighted two key areas of focus in his vision for Malaysian cricket, which include improving the nation’s world ranking and strengthening relationships with MCA stakeholders.
“Improving Malaysia’s world ranking by the next ICC cycle is a priority, as it is crucial for our relevance on the regional and international stage.
“Secondly, I would also like to build stronger working relationships with MCA stakeholders—states and government,” he said.
Looking to the future of cricket in Malaysia, Chung sees the sport’s inclusion in the 2028 and 2032 Summer Olympics as a catalyst for renewed interest, particularly among youth.
“With cricket confirmed for both the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, we expect a significant surge in interest, especially in this region,” he said.
As part of MCA’s strategy to develop young talent, he pointed to initiatives like the Junior Cricket Adiwira programme, supported by Yayasan Sime Darby, as well as other development programmes with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia.
Chung, a former player who represented Sarawak in multiple SUKMA tournaments, including as captain in 1998 and 2000, and in Pahang in 1996, also had stints with Malaysia’s Under-15, Under-19, and senior development squads.
His leadership experience and passion for the sport are expected to play a vital role in his new role with MCA.
