KUCHING: A delegation of Sarawakian athletes participating in Ironman Langkawi 2025 paid a courtesy call to the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Sarawak, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, ahead of their race.
The visit, held at the ministry’s office, was led by team leader, Awang Saifeluddin, with the aim to present the Sarawak flag to the athletes as a symbol of pride and encouragement in representing the state on the international stage.
A statement issued recently mentioned that this year, more than 10 participants from Sarawak will be competing in the Ironman Langkawi, a full-distance triathlon consisting of a 3.8-km swim, 180-km cycle, and 42.2-km run.
“The team also comes well-prepared with a nutritionist, team manager, masseur, and support crew, reflecting a more structured and professional approach to the sport.
“Among the delegation are experienced triathletes, including Lynn Jong, a World Championship qualifier, whose participation continues to inspire younger athletes in the region,” the statement read.
During the meeting, the athletes expressed their gratitude to the ministry for its continued support and shared their hope for more triathlon events to be organised in Sarawak to help develop new talents and strengthen the state’s presence in endurance sports.
Rentap commended the team for their dedication and commitment, encouraging them to carry the Sarawak spirit with pride.
He also reaffirmed the ministry’s support towards fostering multi-discipline sports and promoting active lifestyles among Sarawak youth.
The team also looks forward to future collaborations with the ministry in organising triathlon clinics, youth training programmes, and state-level competitions to build a stronger triathlon community in Sarawak.
