SARAWAK’s major ports have continued to serve as key economic drivers across the state in 2024, demonstrating robust performance.

This was announced by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

Highlighting two key indicators, cargo throughput and port profitability, Uggah provided an optimistic update on the state’s port sector.

In terms of cargo throughput, Kuching Port recorded a notable 7.7 per cent increase handling 9.99 million tonnes, followed by Rajang Port with 4.6 per cent growth to 1.48 million tonnes and Miri Port with a 4 per cent rise to 3.28 million tonnes.

Tanjung Manis Port experienced a 6.3 per cent increase, reaching 1.63 million tonnes, while the standout performer, Samalaju Port, recorded a significant 22.5 per cent surge, managing 6.85 million tonnes of cargo.

On the profitability front, Kuching Port achieved an impressive 38 per cent growth in profits amounting to RM16.16 million, while Rajang Port’s profits rose by 3.5 per cent to RM6.21 million and Miri Port reported a 9.6 per cent increase, reaching RM4.88 million.

Meanwhile, Tanjung Manis Port and Samalaju Port, which previously operated at a loss, recorded substantial reductions in their deficits by 24.74 per cent and 83.57 per cent, amounting to RM5.14 million and RM0.47 million respectively.

“Overall, the cargo throughput and port profitability augur well on both fronts in 2024,” said Uggah.
