KUCHING: Sarawak’s success in renewable energy development continues to serve as a key reference and exemplary model among Asean member states, as well as at the national and international levels.

Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli described Sarawak’s achievements as impressive and deserving of full support.

“Sarawak is already exporting electricity to Kalimantan, and this marks an important starting point for strengthening the Asean Power Grid (APG), particularly along the BIMP corridor involving Sarawak, Brunei, and the Philippines.

“This initiative is also one of the key projects outlined under the APG framework,” he was quoted as saying in a TVS report after chairing the second day of the 43rd Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME).

He added that Sarawak is well regarded among Asean countries for its bold and proactive move to export electricity to neighboring nations.

This advantage, he said, can be fully leveraged through the implementation of the APG, which will further enhance regional energy integration.

The 43rd SOME, held from June 16 to 18, brings together senior energy officials from 10 Asean member states, namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, with Timor-Leste participating as an observer.

Organised by PETRA, the meeting aims to coordinate regional energy policies at the senior official level by reviewing the progress of the Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), and to formulate key decisions ahead of the 43rd Asean Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) scheduled for October.
