BARCELONA, Spain: Sarawak’s growing presence in the global semiconductor industry drew attention at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2026, where SMD Semiconductor showcased its advancements in power electronics technology.
In a press statement, the company said its Chief Executive Officer, Shariman Jamil, delivered a presentation titled ‘Powering the Future with GaN: From Sarawak to Global Energy Systems’ at the Sarawak Pavilion on the second day of the global technology event.
The session drew interest from stakeholders across the semiconductor industry as well as representatives from the government of Catalonia.
Shariman highlighted the increasing importance of gallium nitride (GaN) technology in power electronics and its role in shaping future energy systems.
He also outlined SMD Semiconductor’s long-term ambitions and the company’s efforts to position its technology, including the keteq.GaN platform, within the evolving global energy landscape while strengthening Sarawak’s semiconductor ecosystem.
The presentation also underscored the importance of talent development in supporting industry growth.
Among the initiatives highlighted were the Semiconductor Mastery Programme and a recent collaboration involving University of Bristol and Yayasan Sarawak aimed at nurturing skilled talent for the semiconductor sector.
Discussions at the SMD booth at the Sarawak Pavilion continued throughout the day as visitors sought to learn more about the company’s innovations and Sarawak’s expanding role in the global semiconductor industry.
