SEVEN urban renewal projects are currently underway across Sarawak, reflecting the state government’s firm commitment to modernise traditional settlements and improving the quality of life for local communities.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also the Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, said the projects are being implemented in phases across key locations in Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri.

“These initiatives are part of our broader strategy to enhance urban resilience and deliver equitable access to modern housing for all Sarawakians,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) today.

The key projects include: Darul Hana and Sungai Bedaun in Kuching; Kampung Datu and Kemuyang in Sibu; Kampung Jelutong (In-Situ) Expansion Scheme and Tatau Village Extension in Bintulu; and Padang Kerbau development in Lopeng, Miri.

Awang Tengah said 557 of the 564 houses under Darul Hana Phases I and II had been successfully allocated to households from Kampung Semarang, Panglima Seman Lama, Pulo Ulu, and surrounding areas as of Apr 30, 2025.

“At Sungai Bedaun, 209 homes were built to accommodate extended families. So far, 185 have been allocated, with the rest expected to be handed over soon,” he added.

In Sibu, 64 of the 104 housing units in Kampung Datu Baru have been distributed, while the remaining 40 will be allocated shortly.

In Kemuyang, 117 of the planned 148 units have been handed over, with the final 31 units set for distribution by year-end.

Further north, construction of 184 houses under the Kampung Jelutong and Tatau expansion schemes is on track for completion by the end of 2025, with allocations to begin in early 2026.

Under Phase III of the Darul Hana redevelopment, 94 new homes are currently being built, while an additional 749 units will be rolled out under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

“The same approach will be adopted in the redevelopment of Kampung Datu Lama Block A in Sibu and the Padang Kerbau area in Lopeng, Miri. Site preparation and infrastructure work are expected to begin before year-end,” said Awang Tengah.

These ongoing efforts, he said, reflect the Sarawak government’s vision of sustainable and inclusive urban transformation, ensuring that no community is left behind in the march toward progress.
