KUCHING: Four young water polo players from Sarawak gained invaluable international experience after representing Malaysia at the Asian Age Group Water Polo Championships 2025, held in Singapore from March 25 to 30.

The national team, led by head coach Voon, went head-to-head with some of Asia’s top-tier squads, including Iran, China, and Kazakhstan, in what was a high-intensity and fiercely competitive tournament.

“This is a great exposure for our players. They’re up against some of the best teams in the region, and this kind of experience is crucial for their growth and development.

“The competition also forms an important part of our preparation for the upcoming SEA Games in December, which will be held in Thailand,” said Voon when contacted by Sarawak Tribune today (Apr 6).

The prestigious regional meet served not only as a platform to gauge the progress of Malaysia’s rising talents but also as a vital stepping stone in the team’s SEA Games campaign.

The four Sarawak water polo players are Casper Tan, Presley Phang, Jay Vikneswaran, and Ong Zong Lian.

Looking ahead, the next assignment for Voon will be the Malaysia Invitational Age Group Championships, scheduled to take place at Bukit Jalil from April 18 to 20.

Following that, a return to Singapore for another international outing at the SEA Age Group Championships, slated for June 19 to 22.

With Sarawak athletes making their mark on the international stage, the future of water polo looks increasingly promising—both for the state and the country—as Malaysia continues its push for regional excellence in 2025.
