SARIKEI: Residents here got a breath of fresh air over the weekend as the town centre transformed into a car-free zone in a bid to promote greener living and healthier lifestyles.

The ‘Car-Free Morning’ initiative, held on Saturday at the Dewan Suarah Sarikei car park, is part of a wider effort to position Sarikei as a low-carbon town.

The programme was officiated by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Sarikei.

Speaking at the event, Huang described the initiative as a proactive step towards raising public awareness on environmental issues and the importance of sustainable urban living.

“This programme is more than just a morning without cars.

“It’s about encouraging people to adopt a more active and healthy lifestyle while embracing the ‘Go Green’ culture that is increasingly crucial in today’s world,” he said.

Huang stressed that clean air and a healthy environment are not luxuries but necessities, vital not only for the well-being of today’s communities but also for future generations.

“This kind of initiative aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and air pollution.

“It creates opportunities for people to be more physically active, strengthens community ties, and encourages a more mindful use of public spaces,” he added.

The Deputy Minister also highlighted the importance of collective effort in ensuring the success of such programmes.

“While organisers play a key role, long-term success depends on the continued support and commitment from all sectors, the community, government agencies, the private sector, and civil society organisations,” he said.

Huang expressed his full support for the initiative to be made a regular feature in Sarikei’s calendar and to be gradually expanded to other areas.

“With consistent effort, I believe the spirit of low-carbon living can take root and flourish in Sarikei,” he said.

To support the programme, Huang contributed RM10,000 from his parliamentary allocation.
